Coal mining
Coal mining has been done since ancient times. It was especially important in the Industrial Revolution because they used coal to power machines.
In the UK a coal mine is called a pit, and with its surrounding structures it makes up a colliery.
There are 2 main types of coal mining:
- Surface mining - near the surface
- Underground mining - deep underground
