County town
Appearance
In the UK and Ireland, a county town is the historic location of a county's administrative functions.
Over the years counties have changed to be based in different towns, and some are administered separately from their historic county towns. As a result the idea of a "county town" is now vague and unofficial.
Most counties were named after their county towns, for example Bedfordshire is named for Bedford.
