Debbie Nelson was an American woman best known for the troubled relationship she had with her son, Marshall Mathers, known as Eminem, a famous musician.[2] Several of his songs offered accounts of their troubled relationship.[3]
Nelson bore a second child, Nathan, who ended up in the care of child protection agencies.[4]
Nelson sought $11 million in a defamation suite she filed against her son in 1999.[3] She won, but was only rewarded $25,000.[5] In the end Nelson was only allowed to keep $1,600 of her settlement, because of the unusual contract with her lawyer Fred Gibson.[6] Her lawyer agreed to also represent her then husband John Briggs on felony charges of home invasion and destruction of property, with his Gibson's being drawn from her settlement.
In 2008 Nelson published her memoirs, entitled My Son Marshall, My Son Eminem, to mixed reviews.
Nelson was diagnosed with breast cancer, in 2010.[7] It is reported that she and Eminem reconciled, following her diagnosis.
Eminem released a song, in 2013, "Headlights", which Rolling Stone magazine called a "mature, sincere apology" to Nelson.[4]
In September 2024 Nelson announced she had lung cancer.[8] The Sun reports she died in Eminem's home, confirming their reconciliation.
