Denmark

From Encyc

Denmark is a country in Northern Europe, one of the Scandinavian countries. It is ranked highly in quality of life and GDP. It is a member of the European Union.

Denmark was home for Vikings hundreds of years ago, and has fought pretty much continuously to keep Germans out of the peninsula, going so far as to construct a wall across it.

In the 19th century, Denmark fought a losing war against Germany and lost the province of Schleswig-Holstein. It regained it during World War I.

It was occupied by the Germans during World War II and put up little resistance, though many Danes participated in helping several thousand Jews escape by ship to Sweden. Nearly all the Jews made it out, and some Danish Jews sent to concentration camps survived the war.

Hans Christian Anderson, a childrens author, lived in Denmark.

It has a long coast and lots of seafaring tradition.
