Ferdinand Magellan was a Spanish explorer who was the first to circumnavigate the world and prove that the Earth was round. He didn't quite complete the voyage, being ambushed and killed by natives in the Philippines. However his crew carried on and made it back to Spain.

He discovered the Straits of Magellan off of Cape Horn, at the southern tip of South America, and was the first European to cross the Pacific.

Magellan is Jerry Seinfeld's favorite explorer.
