George III
King George III (1738-1820) was the ruler of Great Britain, Ireland and Hanover, 1760-1820. He was the grandson of George II; his father, Frederick Prince of Wales, had died before George II.
He married Princess Charlotte of Mecklenberg-Strelitz; they had fifteen children, including George IV, Frederick Duke of York and William IV.
The American Revolution, the creation of the United Kingdom and the Napoleonic Wars all occurred during his reign. He attempted to exert more control over the American colonies, which caused them to rebel.
In his later years, he suffered such severe mental breakdowns that he could not function as king and his son, George Prince of Wales (later George IV) had to act as Prince Regent.
