Hawker Hurricane
The Hawker Hurricane was a British fighter airplane used primarily during World War II. Along with the Supermarine Spitfire, it intercepted and destroyed German bombers and their fighter escorts.
More numerous than the Spitfires, Hurricanes played a proportionally larger role in the defense of the island.
Harry Hawker came from the Sopwith Aviation Company, and cofounded Hawker Aircraft with Tom Sopwith, among others. They had produced many of the excellent British airplanes of World War I, and continued to produce combat aircraft well into the jet age.
