History
History is a systematic account or study of a past event or more generally the origin and progress of the world, a country, an institution, etc.
Governments and political leaders often attempt to manipulate public opinion by controlling history. They will spin, hide facts, emphasize some facts at the expense of others, and attack those who speak out with unpopular viewpoints. Historical figures may be celebrated or villainized, depending on the fashion of the day, and leaders may attempt to place themselves within a grand historical framework as a way to encourage buy-in for their megalomaniacal schemes.
