Houston Shipping Channel

From Encyc

The Houston Ship Channel is a canal that stretches from the coast of Texas, near Galveston, inland, 50 miles (80 km) to Houston. The channel is 45 feet (14 m) deep, and is capable of carrying ocean-going vessels.

In recent years the channel has carried several hundred million tons of cargo, to and from Houston.

Galveston lies on the edge of a lagoon, enclosed behind a sandspit. The channel pierces the sandspit, and a channel is kept dredged, in the lagoon.
