Lancelot Brown
Lancelot Brown (1716-83) was an English landscape gardener, who exercised a major influence on his craft.
His great achievement was to establish a uniquely English style of garden lay-out. He produced natural effects by a series of simple artifices. Good examples of his work are at Blenheim Palace, Kew Gardens, the Stowe Estate and Warwick Castle.
His habit of telling clients that their gardens "have excellent capabilities" gave him his nickname of Capability Brown.
