England
England is a region of the United Kingdom, occupying most of its area and including the great majority of its population. It shares land borders with Wales to its west and Scotland to its north. The Irish Sea is northwest and the Celtic Sea to the southwest. It is separated from continental Europe by the North Sea to the east and the English Channel to the south.
England was a separate country until the creation of Great Britain in 1707, although the status of Wales was unclear. There has been no parliament for England since 1707. However, it is still treated as a separate country for many purposes. For example, it has its own football team distinct from those of Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland.
The patron saint of England is St. George and the English flag consists of a red cross (the cross of St. George) on a white background.
