Major player during 16th century. Allied to Poland. Later lost out to Sweden and Russia. Independent from Russia after World War I but reabsorbed after World War II. Independent again in 1990s Borders with Baltic sea, Poland, Latvia, Belarus, Kaliningrad exclave (Russia).
