Llandrindod Wells Town

Llandrindod Wells is a town in central Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Radnorshire. In Welsh the town is known as Llandrindod and locally it is often called Llandod.

Llandrindod was also a historic parish - in 1833 it had a population of just 182, and only covered the southern half of what is now the town today.[1] The northern half was in the separate parish of Cefnllys.[2]

The Llandrindod parish existed until 1891, when it had a population of 336.[3] Since then there were separate civil parishes of Llandrindod Urban and Llandrindod Rural. Llandrindod Urban was the one covering the town, and by 1921 its population was already 1,489.[4] Llandrindod Wells's growth has continued since, and as of 2021 its population was 5,602.

The name of the town comes from "llan" (meaning church/parish), "drindod" (referring to the Holy Trinity) and "wells" (referring to the mineral springs in the area). Llandrindod Wells was a spa town in the 19th century, much like nearby towns such as Builth Wells and Llanwrtyd Wells. Originally it was named "Llandow" meaning "church of god".[5]

The Holy Trinity Church, over 1 km south-east of Llandrindod Wells, was completely rebuilt in 1894. The original village of Llandrindod was located here, this area is now known as Llandrindod Hall.[5]
