MSC Baltic III

From Encyc
The MSC Baltic III aground near Lark Harbour, Newfoundland.

The MSC Baltic III is a bulk carrier. She ran aground, after a loss of engine power, on Newfoundland's west coast, near Lark Harbour, on February 15, 2025.[1] The vessel was experiencing really bad weather, while waiter her turn to enter the harbour at Corner Brook.[2][3]

The vessel was built in Germany in 2003.[3] She is flagged in Liberia.[4]

An RCAF Cormorant helicopters rescued the crew of 20.[5]

The ship's owners have dispatched a salvage crew.[6] The Canadian Coast Guard Ship Jean Goodwill has been delegated to carry pollution control equipment to the site, to try to contain the oil that leaks from the vessel, as comes apart.

CBC News gave an update on the state of the vessel on February 15, 2026, the one year anniversary of the wreck.[7] They reported that some but not all of its potentially very damaging fuel has been removed. So far none of the remaining fuel has caused damage. 409 of its 472 cargo containers have been removed. Plans are to break the vessel up, in situ, and carry the parts away by truck. Temporary roads to the site have been built.
