Melbourne

Melbourne is Australia's 2nd largest city, behind Sydney, with a population of approximately 3 million out of a total population of 22 million. Melbourne is located in the state of Victoria.

Melbourne is known for their sports, especially AFL, for their comedy (including the annual Melbourne International Comedy Festival), for their pornography and prostitutes (brothels are legal in Melbourne and are advertised in newspapers), in addition to (recently) for their organised crime, although they would claim that in actual fact there is more organised crime in Sydney. Melbourne is one of Australia's most popular tourist destinations.

Melbourne generally hates Sydney, in a similar way to how USA's northern states hate the southern states. There has never been a civil war however.

Melbourne has large Greek, Italian and Lebanese communities. Indeed, Melbourne has more Greeks living there than any other city in the world outside of Athens in Greece itself. These racial groups are combined called "wogs". This was initially a racial slur, although nowadays it is a badge worn with pride by many of these people. In many ways they combine to form their own groups.

In other ways, however, Greeks and Italians traditionally hate each other, and due to the large ethnic groups in Melbourne, this hatred spills over into more serious endeavours. The mafia, sometimes known as the "Italian Mafia" (so as to distinguish themselves from the Russian mafia and groups from other nations) operates in Melbourne, as does the "Greek Mafia" and indeed apparently a separate group called the "Sicilian Mafia" also operates. The Lebanese are also involved in organised crime, although they do not call themselves mafia.

There are a number of crime families in Melbourne that are not "wogs", however, many of which are apparently controlled by a matriach, or a mother of a number of boys who start it. These groups are just as powerful as any of the "wog" groups that operate in Melbourne.

As with anywhere with a large amount of organised crime, most of the time most people in Melbourne don't notice it. It is only when walking into the wrong areas or doing the wrong things, or sometimes just when you are unlucky that you might notice it.

The organised crime in Melbourne came to a fore with the gangland murders, whereby a man who was on trial for murder was himself assassinated when he was going into court. The man who assassinated him was then also assassinated, and then he was assassinated, and so forth 5 times over, with many other associated murders. This all has been put into a TV series called "underworld", with real people and their real names listed, although some of its content was fictionalised.

Melbourne has a drug culture, which includes hard drugs, but is primarily marijuana and other lesser drugs. The current laws are that you are permitted to have 1 plant of marijuana in your own house, in other words that you can grow your own. This is apparently to try to prevent the need for drug dealers. The interpretation is that you are also allowed to have an amount equivalent to 1 plant, although that is interpreted differently each time. Melbourne is generally very tolerant of drug use.
