Mexican Cession of 1848

From Encyc
Mexican Cession of 1848

The country of Mexico won independence from Spain, in 1828, and, in 1848, was forced into the Mexican Cession of 1848, following its defeat in the Mexican-American War.[1]

Mexico ceded approximately half of its territory -- its sparsely held and very loosely administered northern territory.[1] Once annexed into the United States that territory became the states of California, Nevada, Arizona, Utah, and parts of wyoming, Colorado and New Mexico.
