Morocco

Morocco is a country in north Africa. Mainly Berber in background, it was colonized by Carthaginians, Romans, and then Arabs. In the early 20th century, France and Spain briefly set up protectorates. The country is located south of the Strait of Gibraltar, giving it strategic importance to anyone using the Mediterranean Sea for shipping.

The capital is Rabat and the largest city is Casablanca.

Morocco has an ongoing dispute about Western Sahara, formerly Spanish Sahara, which it claims.

During World War II, Morocco was liberated in Operation Torch. Vichy French forces briefly resisted before flipping to the Free French side.
