New Brighton, Flintshire
New Brighton is a village in Flintshire, Wales, between the towns of Mold and Buckley. It has a population of about 900.
The English name arose in the 19th century, perhaps because of workers at Argoed Colliery being from New Brighton, Merseyside.
The Welsh name for the village was probably Pentre Catherall at first, named after Josiah Catherall who built the first row of houses at what would become the village. It later became Pentre Cythraul (the devil's village). In 2018 the Welsh Language Commissioner released its list of standardised place names, and New Brighton had no Welsh name.[1] In 2024 a variant form Pentre Cythrel was officially adopted, to better reflect local pronunciation and avoid the negative connotations of the devil.[2]
There is a hotel in the village, the Beaufort Park Hotel.
