Nuclear Italy

From Encyc

Italy is a nuclear power. The licence to use those weapons was given after World War II by the United States. On the territory there are American nuclear weapons, ready to be used. The two nuclear deposits at Aviano and Ghedi Torre contain 90 nuclear bombs. A report from the US defense department has attested that the potential of destruction is about 900 times that of the bomb of Hiroshima.

The document was ordered by Roger Brady, of the Air Force in Europe, after a B52 erroneously transported six nuclear weapons in a flight over the States. The report reveals that: "problems in buildings, fences of the deposits, illumination and security systems, those who guard the bases are soldiers with few months of training".

At the base of Ghedi Torre, some years ago a group of boys made a picnic for half a hour before being identified. It was a security test made to verify the security levels of the base, documented afterwards by Swiss television.

An explosion caused by a human error, or a attack by terrorists, could easily erase all of Northern Italy and Switzerland, plus parts of France, Austria, Slovenia and Croatia.

Time Magazine has posed a question on its papers, with the title "What to do about Europe secret nukes". The question is: "Is Italy capable of delivering a thermonuclear strike?". According to Time, in case of war, Italy could be able to control and use the B61 thermonuclear bombs on its territory, following an agreement made during the Cold War.

The presence of nuclear weapons in Italy violates the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty. The bombs, made in the USA, should therefore go back to their country of origin.
