Paraguay
Paraguay is a country in South America and one of only two (along with Bolivia) land-locked countries in the Western Hemisphere. It shares the name with the Paraguay river.
Paraguay was colonized by the Spanish Empire and Spanish is an official language of the country, along with Guarani, an indigenous language spoken originally by the Guarani people. The language adoption in the country is peculiar as Guarani was not suppressed with the arrival of the Spanish, but instead it spread and it is also used by people who are white or mestizo.
The War of the Triple Alliance was a disastrous event for the country, with much of the male population being killed in war, and with some estimates placing the overall death toll as high as 90% of the total pre-war population.
