Penyfynwent

From Encyc
Penyfynwent Barrow

Penyfynwent is a place just north-east of Rhosybol in Anglesey. Penyfynwent Barrow and Penyfynwent Enclosure are scheduled monuments.

The round barrow is prehistoric and possibly the site of a former chapel.[1][2] The adjacent cottage is also named Penyfynwent.

The enclosure is medieval, and is thought to be the site of one of three former churches: Bettws Bwchwdw, Capel Tegeryn, a church dedicated to Morwenna.[3][4]

Bettws Bwchwdw was occasionally also known as Llanbwchwdw, and once as Llanbochwdw. Nothing was known about the saint "Bwchwdw" that the church was dedicated to. Today there remains hardly any trace of its existence.[5]
