Map of Anglesey

Anglesey, or Ynys Môn in Welsh, is an island off the north-west coast of Wales. It forms most of the historic county of Anglesey, as well as the modern principal area of the Isle of Anglesey, which also includes Holy Island and other smaller islands. As of 2022 the Isle of Anglesey principal area has a population of about 69,000.

Anglesey is separated from the mainland of Wales by the Menai Strait. Its isolation makes it one of the areas with the highest proportion of Welsh speakers in all of Wales.

The main town at the centre of the island is Llangefni. Holyhead is located on the nearby Holy Island. There is also the village of Llanfairpwllgwyngyllgogerychwyrndrobwllllantysiliogogogoch, famous for its contrived long name. It is usually referred to as Llanfair PG or Llanfairpwll.

Anglesey has lots of history. It has been associated with the druids in the past. Now the area has lots of historic churches. There is also Beaumaris Castle, and Aberffraw which was once the capital of the Kingdom of Gwynedd.
