Pine Barrens
Appearance
The Pine Barrens or Pinelands are a forested area in southern New Jersey with sandy, unproductive soil. The predominant tree type is pine, and there are frequent forest fires. There are bogs in which carnivorous plants can be found. The bogs also contain bog iron, which was used during the Revolutionary War as a source of iron for the colonists. Loyalists also fled into the Pine Barrens during this war, and their descendents can still be found in the area. Until the 20th century they spoke a relatively unchanged form of the King's English. The Jersey Devil lives in the Pine Barrens.
