Pistyll Rhaeadr

From Encyc

Pistyll Rhaeadr is often seen as the tallest waterfall in Wales. However others such as Pistyll y Llyn are actually larger.[1]

Pistyll Rhaeadr is located about 4 miles north-west of Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant in the county of Powys. The nearest major town is Oswestry, about 16 miles away.

The waterfall is formed by the Afon Disgynfa, which drops in 3 stages down a 240 feet (73 m) cliff face. Below the waterfall it is known as the River Rhaeadr.[2]

Many of the local place names seem to refer to the waterfall. In the name of the waterfall itself, pistyll means "waterfall", and rhaeadr (from the river) also means "waterfall". The Afon Disgynfa's name comes from disgyn meaning "to descend". Other place names are also derived from these words, such as Tanypistyll and Llanrhaeadr-ym-Mochnant.

Pistyll Rhaeadr is one of the "Seven Wonders of Wales".
