In biology the term pollen refers to the cells plants use to mix their genes with the genes of other plants. They are the plant equivalent of animal's sperm and ovum.
Flowering plants, which include many crops we rely on for food, rely on insects, like bees and butterflies, to pick up pollen in the flower, of one plant. and carry it to the flower of another plant.
Cereals let the wind distribute their pollen.
