Pyrrhic victory

A pyrrhic victory is a battle so costly to the victors that it destroys the ability of their forces to continue afterwards. It is named after the Greek general Pyrrhus of Epirus, who invaded Rome. He defeated the Romans but then declared, "If we are victorious in one more battle with the Romans, we shall be utterly ruined."
