Royal Canadian Navy

The Royal Canadian Navy is a navy operated by the Government of Canada.[1] In contrast to the United States's sudden independence, through a rebellion, Canada became fully independent gradually. Although the Dominion of Canada confederated on July 1, 1967, it relied on the United Kingdom's Royal Navy well into the early 19th century. A small navy was created, in 1910, using vessels gifted from the Royal Navy, and officered by individuals loaned from the Royal Navy.
The Navy was small when Canada entered World War 2. The Battle of the Atlantic required commissioning large numbers of anti-submarine escorts, like the Flower class corvettes, many of which were operated by the Royal Canadian Navy. When World War 2 ended Most of the Axis navies had been sunk, with the remaining vessels seized by the victors. The British had sunk all of the French Navy's capital ships, so they could not be seized by the Germans. So, with its large fleet of escorts, the Royal Canadian Navy was said to be then the third largest fleet in the world.
