Sodium Chloride
Appearance

The chemical compound Sodium Chloride consists of a single atom of Sodium and Chlorine.[1]
Both molecules of Sodium Chloride and molecules of Hydrogen di-Oxide are polar molecules.[1] The molecules have a polar direction, with one side positive and one side negative. Since the water molecules are more strongly bound than the Sodium Chloride molecules, it disassociates into ions of Sodium and Chloride. The individual ions are surrounded by molecules of water, oriented due to their polar nature.

At the molecular level, salt dissolves in water due to electrical charges and due to the fact that both water and salt compounds are polar, with positive and negative charges on opposite sides in the molecule.
