Surname

In linguistics the term surname refers to the portion of an individual's personal name that is inherited from a parent.

Some language groups don't use surnames. Traditional Arabic language names don't use surnames. European people did not use surnames until the 13th century. In the European language tradition the surname follows the given name. In many east Asian languages the family name precedes the given name.
