Sydney

From Encyc

Sydney is the largest city in Australia, with approximately 4 million people out of the total population of 22 million (excluding the capital city of Canberra). Sydney is in the state of New South Wales, which entirely encircles the capital city of Canberra. New South Wales also contains Botany Bay, where James Cook first landed in Australia in 1770 (this event being the official discovery of Australia).

Sydney is most well known for the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the Sydney Opera House. Officially, Sydney is Australia's number one tourist destination, although Sydney itself is not a tourist town because the population is so large.

Sydney has a rivalry with Melbourne, the second largest city, and many Australians take sides one way or the other.

Sydney has a large Asian population.

There is organised crime in the city relating to various ethnic crime gangs and their opponents. Thai gangs are apparently dominant at the moment, although that changes on a regular basis. Like Melbourne, Sydney has a large organised crime area, with some areas that people are advised simply to avoid if they wish to survive.

Sydney is known for their fantastic night life, with night clubs everywhere that offer things that are not seen in the rest of Australia, and only exist in some of the best parts of Europe.

Sydney is also known for their large gay community, and for their annual Gay Mardi Gras, where homosexuals of both genders (and bisexuals) march, some with floats, to show off their homosexuality.

Sydney is generally stylish, rich, fancy and posh, unlike Melbourne. They also have a great slum area, and probably have the greatest difference between rich and poor that exists anywhere in Australia.

Drug use in Sydney is very much high end drugs, including cocaine, ice, crystal meth, heroin and acid, although marijuana also exists. The laws that currently exist officially prohibit drug use, but have an exception whereby under a certain amount of drugs is acceptable. Whilst this is meant to only be associated with marijuana, it is often applied to other drugs too, hence decriminalising it. Sydney is the most accepting of drugs of any of Australia's cities.
