Talk:Essjay scandal

Links[edit]

There are WAY too many red links in this article. Star651 22:00, 30 October 2011 (UTC)

Two reasons DB is red. 1) Encyc:BLP. 2) DP in particular has repeatedly stated he doesn't want wiki articles about himself. Auggie 02:55, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Does that mean that this is bogus because of BLP? I wrote that article. Star651 03:17, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah I'm not quite sure how to deal with self-titled musical acts. On the one hand, it seems like a BLP, on the other it's like a movie franchise. I've been letting articles like that slide, but if you think we need to spell it out a little more formally we can. Auggie 03:25, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

My opinion! Hope you're not offended by this. Any article is allowed, as long as it's not false, and that the subject matter is fairly clean (I'm still zeep-zooping over whether this article is really clean for Encyc). My opinion is, Wikipedia has all these notability policies, and Encyc should be a place for notable AND non-notable things. For example, my best friend is in a Celtic music band, but it's only known here in Michigan. And even there, they are not THAT popular. I think that as long as you have externies that link to news articles, YouTube videos, etc., that it should be okay. I don't know if an article about "International Sandwich Video on Redtube" would make it, because of the video's graphic, sick, pornographic content. So videos like that, no. Bands, yes. This, I believe, is a non-notable place. The policies should all be against spam, vandalism, and certain restrictions on obscene content (which I don't know the exact rule on, knowing Wipipedia was allowed). But, I think that people should be allowed to write about people they know, as long as there are articles, videos, etc. to back it up. For example, that local Celtic band that my friend is in, well, I have not one, but THREE YouTube video links to back it up. So that should be okay. Let's write articles about Lady Gaga and link it to ladygaga.com or whatever it's called, ladygagaofficial on YouTube. Let's write about Justin Bieber and link it to kidrauhl on YouTube, justinbiebervevo on YouTube, justinbieber on Twitter, bieberfever.com, etc., but those are notable. What about the dectalk.com online audio series? Dectalk.com is a website, so, dingdingding! We have an external link! We can back it up! So, as long as we have backing links, then we're good. Non-notability land! Bye, Wikipedia editing! (Oh, that's right! I said that in early 2010! I was still an IP there yet!). So, I'll still read Wikipedia, but we'll edit here, if we want to write something about a notable topic, or not a notable topic. Back up with links, and we should be booming! Let's clear that up for everyone! Star651 03:48, 31 October 2011 (UTC)

Yeah, Wikipedia probably has reasons for being the way it is. But I don't see why we couldn't acknowledge the existence of an obscure band with an article, and maybe a discography and leave out anything that could potentially invade anyone's privacy or be controversial.
