The White House

From Encyc

The White House has been the home of the Americn President since 1800, when John Adams, the second President, moved in. By the term of Harry Truman the building required such extensive work that its historic fittings were removed, and the building was gutted. A new steel frame, was built inside the old facade. New subterranean sections were built, for security purposes. Truman lived in nearby Blair House, during the years of reconstruction.

The West Wing and The East Wing were added in the late 19th century. New living quarters were added on an upper floor. A bowling alley and a movie theatre were added.

In 2025 Donald Trump, the 47th President, surprised commentators by demolishing The East Wing, without taking any steps to preserve historic elements. His plan was to replace it with a massive ballroom, that will dwarf the original sections of The White House. He promised the public that "donors" would pay for the new ballroom.
