Torfaen is a county borough in south-east Wales. Historically it was part of Monmouthshire. In 1974 Torfaen was made a district of Gwent, and in 1996 it became one of the 22 new principal areas of Wales.
The name Torfaen means "breaker of stones" and is an old name for the River Lwyd which flows through the county borough. The main towns in Torfaen are: (from north to south)
