Trefelin BGC
Trefelin Boys and Girls Club is a football club based in Velindre, Port Talbot, Wales. They play their home matches at Ynys Park.
The club first formed a team in 1984, initially playing at under-9 and under-10 level.[1]
The men's team was formed a few years later and its first success was winning the Port Talbot & District League Second Division in 1990-91. The First Division title followed in 1994-95 and they were promoted to the South Wales Amateur League. In their first SWAL season they won the Second Division to make it a second promotion in a row.[1] In this time they won the FAW Trophy in 1999-2000.[2]
In 2001-02 Trefelin were relegated back to the SWAL Second Division and stayed there for five seasons. They won the title again in 2006-07 to return to the league's top division.[3] After promotion they had some success, winning the John Owen Cup in 2011-12 and then a double of the league title and John Owen Cup in 2013-14. However a playoff against South Wales Senior League champions Cwm Welfare was required to gain promotion to the Welsh League for the first time. Trefelin lost and remained in the SWAL.[4]
In summer 2015 the South Wales Amateur and Senior leagues merged, forming the South Wales Alliance League. Trefelin were the first ever champions of the new league and they gained promotion to the Welsh League Third Division (tier 4). After 3 seasons at that level, they finished 2nd in 2018-19 and were promoted to tier 3. Restructures meant this was now the First Division of the Welsh League. The 2019-20 season was abandoned due to the COVID-19 pandemic, at the time of abandonment Trefelin were unbeaten and they were declared champions.[3]
This led to promotion to the Cymru South (tier 2) and they struggled in their first few seasons. In 2022-23 Trefelin finished in a relegation place but were reprieved after Llanidloes Town appealed a transfer to the southern league.[5] In 2024-25 it was a significant improvement as they finished 4th and won the southern section of the Welsh Blood Service League Cup. The next season was even better as Trefelin were champions, gaining promotion to the Cymru Premier, the top tier of Welsh football.[1]
During Trefelin's quick rise up the league system they have been one of the better supported clubs in Welsh league football. An average attendance of 416 in 2025-26 made them the 8th-best supported club in the Welsh league system, and the 2nd-best supported outside of the top flight.[6]
Trefelin also had a women's team who were promoted into the Welsh Premier Women's League in 2010. The team became part of Port Talbot Town FC in 2012.
