Turkey-in-Europe
Appearance
Turkey-in-Europe is a historical term for the part of the Ottoman Empire that was in Europe. From about the 17th to the 19th centuries, Turkey controlled most of the Balkans and Greece. Greece gained its independence in the early 1800s and then Turkey lost both the first and second Balkan wars, losing most of Turkey-in-Europe around the turn of the 20th century.
Turkey lost World War I and with it some additional parts of Turkey in Europe. Parts of Thrace, near Istanbul, remain Turkish to this day.
