Tylwch

From Encyc

Tylwch is a village on the River Dulas in Powys, Wales. It is located south of Llanidloes, in the parish of Llangurig. It is at the southern edge of historic Montgomeryshire, where it bordered Radnorshire.

The place name is thought to mean "House of Peace".[1] It may instead come from "tal llwch", meaning "head of the lake", "llwch" is an obsolete word for lake (the current Welsh word for lake is "llyn"). However there is no lake at Tylwch.[2]

On 16 September 1899 there was a crash at Tylwch railway station. A mail train was stuck head-on by an excursion train bound for Manchester. Five people were injured, and a 24-year-old woman from nearby Pantydwr was killed.[3] The station closed in 1962, with the closure of the Mid-Wales Railway.

There is a woollen mill in the village, and the West Fedw lead mine is nearby. Both were important industries in the area before they closed.[4]
