United States Coast Guard

The United States Coast Guard is an agency of the United States Federal Government. It was formed, in 1915, from the amalgamation of older agencies, including the United States Revenue Cutter Service, the United States Lifesaving Service and the United States Lighthouse Service.

It originally was under the authority of the United States Treasury, except during wartime, when ti was under the authority of the United States Department of Defense. But following the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, it was transferred to the new [[Department of Homeland Security.
