United States Department of Defense

From Encyc

The United States Department of Defense is an agency of the United States government, created by the National Security Act of 1947.[1]

Prior to act creating the Department of Defense there were two separate cabinet positions, the Secretary of War, and the Secretary of the Navy, in charge of the War Department and the United States Navy.[1] The act also created a new cabinet position, the Secretary of Defense, and demoted the Secretary of War]], and the [[Secretary of the Navy, to be his subordinates. The act also created another deputy, the Secretary of the Air Force, and split the Army Air Corps from the United States Army, creating the United States Air Force.
