United States Navy

From Encyc

The United States Navy is the United States's primary armed naval force. It is not the United States first Navy, nor is it the nation's only armed naval force. During the American revoluton the states operated the Continental Navy, and the current navy honors some of its heroes, like John Paul Jones. It was disbanded following independence as some founding fathers feared centralizing power. Alexander Hamilton, the first Treasurer, initiated the USA's first armed maritime service, the Revenue Cutter Service -- since amalgamated into the Coast Guard.
