Urban Dictionary

From Encyc

The Urban Dictionary is a online dictionary of mostly slang terms. It was started in 1999 by Aaron Peckham.

Content[edit]

The entries on Urban Dictionary are user-created, in a similar way to Wikipedia and Encyc. Urban Dictionary isn't really a wiki, though. It is just a website in which people create entries. Unlike wikis, when a user submits to Urban Dictionary, it does not become public until all the volunteer editors, who have Urban Dictionary accounts, approve of it. The site has a policy on racism and sexism, but not on offensive language; in fact, racial slurs are documented quite frequently. People who want clean slang can use Unwords.com, and people who want "PG-13" slang can go to PseudoDictionary.com, competitors of Urban Dictionary. They also have released books, one in 2005 and one in 2007. There was also an Urban calendar for 2009, and one for 2010. 2009 was the year that they let users buy coffee mugs, shirts, magnets and other things that had whatever Urban definition they want on them.
