Virginia

From Encyc

Virginia is a state in the United States. It was first settled in 1607 by the English. Many of the early settlers were Scotch-Irish, and they pushed over the Appalachian mountains quickly.

Early growth was fueled by tobacco farming, which was very labor intensive and resulted in the importation of African slaves. Later, with the decline in tobacco and growth of cotton farming, some of their descendants were sold to plantations in the deep South.

Virginia led the Confederacy and was devastated during the Civil War. Some of the western counties seceded from the state and formed West Virginia, which was quickly admitted to the Union.
