William the Conqueror

William the Conqueror was a Norman leader who led the last successful invasion of England. In 1066, he defeated King Harold at the Battle of Hastings. He wrested control of England from the Anglo-Saxons and granted his Norman followers large feudal estates. In the years following the war, he pacified northern England through a genocidal campaign called the "harrowing of the North".
