Strata Florida Abbey

Strata Florida or Ystrad Fflur is a small hamlet in Ceredigion, Wales, adjacent to a former Cistercian abbey.

Strata Florida Abbey ("vale of flowers" in Latin) was founded in 1164. In the 13th century it became very important. The abbey was dissolved in 1539, but the parish church of St Mary still remains on the site.

In local government there is a community called Ystrad Fflur. In 2011 it had a population of 712. It also includes Pontrhydfendigaid and Ffair-rhos.[1]

In the past Strata Florida (or Caron-Uwch-Clawdd) was a chapelry in the parish of Tregaron, covering a different area to the present community. It excluded Pontrhydfendigaid and Ffair-rhos, but included significant areas to the south.[2]

From 1866 to 1965 the village had a station on the Carmarthen-Aberystwyth line.
