Alex Pretti was an American nurse, who was one of the Minnesotans who chose to monitor actions by Federal immigration officials that they considered controversial.[1]
Under US law, while someone who is driving a vehicle has a legal obligation to show their driver's license, ordinary citizens are not under an obligation to show their ID papers to law enforcement officers, who lack what US law calls "probable cause".[2] However, as part of the Donald Trump Presidency's promised crackdown on illegal immigration, immigration officials have been aggressively demanding identity papers from visible minorities.
Pretti was shot and killed around 9am on January 23, 2026, at a confrontation between American citizens and immigration officials.[3] Trump officials quickly denounced Pretti as a "domestic terrorist", and claimed he had attacked the officials while holding a handgun.[4] Video from the scene contradicted the official account on practically every point.

Federal authorities said the slain man, Alex Pretti, had approached agents with a gun. But videos show Mr. Pretti was holding his phone, not a weapon, when they pulled him to the ground.

Bovino’s sudden demotion is the clearest sign yet that the Trump administration is reconsidering its most aggressive tactics after the killing Saturday of 37-year-old Alex Pretti by Border Patrol agents under Bovino’s command.
