Azerbaijan

Azerbaijan is a country in the Caucasus at the boundary between Europe and Asia. Baku is the capital city.

Azerbaijan declared independence on 30 August 1991, a not long before the dissolution of the Soviet Union. In September the Armenians in Nagorno-Karabakh declared independence as the Republic of Artsakh but had little recognition. In 2023 the people of Artsakh fled to Armenia and the republic ceased to exist.

The national language is Azeri. About 97% of the population is Muslim.
