Battle of Trafalgar

From Encyc

The Battle of Trafalgar was one of the most decisive naval battles of the Napoleonic Wars. The British fleet met the larger combined French and Spanish fleets. Admiral Nelson's aggressive plan had the British line cut through the French and Spanish. Although he lost his life in the battle, the British preserved their control over the Strait of Gibraltar and retained the ability to bottle the French and Spanish up in the Mediterranean. This improved their international trading position and prevented a French invasion of England.
