Strait of Gibraltar

From Encyc

The Strait of Gibraltar connects the Atlantic Ocean with the Mediterranean Sea. It is bounded in the north by Spain and Portugal and in the south by North Africa.

The area holds immense strategic significance because it controls access to the Mediterranean and to the Suez Canal (quickest sea route from western Europe to India and Asia). For this reason the British have kept a possession at Gibraltar.

The Battle of Trafalgar was fought in the area.
