Cantref
Appearance

A cantref was a division of land in medieval Wales.
The word 'cantref' comes from the Welsh words 'cant' (100) and 'tref' (town/settlement), though in practice they would rarely have such an exact number. Cantrefs were divided into smaller commotes. Usually cantrefs were made up of 2 or 3 commotes.
Some cantrefs still appear in place names today, such as Llansantffraid ym Mechain (Llansantffraid in Mechain - Mechain was a cantref).
