Churchstoke

From Encyc
St Nicholas' Church

Churchstoke (also spelt Church Stoke; Yr Ystog in Welsh) is a village and former parish in Powys, Wales. It was in the historic county of Montgomeryshire, and is near the border with the English county of Shropshire.[1]

Churchstoke Community Council covers the settlements of Churchstoke, Old Churchstoke, Hyssington, White Grit, Pentre, and Snead.[2]

Churchstoke is one of few settlements in Wales located east of Offa's Dyke, which had traditionally formed the border of England and Wales. It was recorded in the Domesday Book as Cirestoc, stoc meaning place or settlement. It is from stoc that the Welsh name Yr Ystog comes from.[3]

The church at Churchstoke is believed to have early medieval origins, but the current church of St Nicholas was largely built in 1815.
