Cynog

From Encyc

Cynog ap Brychan was a 5th century Welsh saint. He was the son of Brychan, king of Brycheiniog. His feast day is on 7 or 9 October.

He is best remembered in Brecknockshire (the area of former Brycheiniog), with churches at Ystradgynlais, Penderyn, Defynnog, Battle, Llangynog and Merthyr Cynog all named after him. Merthyr Cynog is where he is said to have been buried, the name of the village refers to his shrine. There are also places named Llangynog in Carmarthenshire and Montgomeryshire, a church at Boughrood in Radnorshire is dedicated to him, and his name has been stated as a possible origin of Bedlinog.
